Nana Beth (Bartling) and Pop Pop (John Mathias Lane)

"My name is Robert Bernard Bartling...I would be curious to know how you are related to Beth as that also makes you my relative."

"...I am the son of Earl Francis Bartling and Beth (Althea Elizabeth) was my half sister.  She also had a brother Earl Francis Bartling, Jr. who was also my half brother.  The person mentioned in the draft registration, Edna B. Bartling, was Earl's 2nd wife and also my mother."

"My mother and Beth were friendly as there was not a great age difference between them.  The lumber yard my father owned was named Suburban Lumber and to this day still is in existence.  I had been to Beth's house in 1956 or 1958.  We used to joke that I was John's uncle because he was slightly older than me."

"I have pictures of John August Henry Bartling and his wife if you are interested.  I also have been to Conrad Friederick's home site in Germany and his grave in Ohio.  There is a grave stone there and I took a picture of it."

26 APRIL 2013

Hello Bob,

It has not been until this spring that I finished a holiday season job in retail and am getting back into the Quilt genealogy work.  How exciting to find your email.

I am Lara Lynn Lane, the granddaughter of Nana Beth and John Mathias Lane.  Unfortunately for us, they died when I was still very young.  So I did not have a chance to learn much about our family tree from them.

So...Earl Francis Bartling was married to Althea Ruth Hovey and had Nana Beth (Althea Elizabeth Bartling b. 25 JULY 1917 in Oaklyn, NJ).  Do you know when they got married?  And you are telling me Nana Beth had a brother??  Was Earl Francis Bartling, Jr. her only sibling from that marriage?

I'm not even sure of when and why Althea Ruth Hovey died.  Do you know?  Matter of fact, I seem to only have the date 9 JULY as Althea Ruth's birthday (the little bit of information I have I copied down from Nana Beth's Bible).  The Bible lists Earl Francis Bartling's life dates as born 18 JUNE 1896 (Oaklyn, Camden, NJ) and died 2 SEPT 1954.  This would've been just a couple years before you visited Nana and Pop Pop (John Mathias Lane).

I would so very much like to see a picture of John August Henry Bartling!!!!  And to post any pictures we can on the Quilt site.  I have a little time now.  I also have an uncle (John and Beth had two boys, Jack and Edward, Edward is my dad) and his family who are interested in me telling the family tree story online.  Photographs would be greatly appreciated.  Plus, I could quilt segments of our emailing which I've done with some other leads.

The Hoveys were into house furnishings and baking so far as I can glean.  And I had heard wind of lumbering on Nana Beth's side of the family but was unclear of any details.  I'm truly excited to hear more from you.

Hoping you are well,

Lara Lynn Lane
